Now The Day Is Over

I could remember one nursery rhyme that lifted my spirit every weekday while growing up. It goes thus, now the day is over, night is drawing nigh, shadow of the evening....  I would always leap for joy when I heard the sound of the final clanging bell because I could predict the next song. The sole reason why I loved the song was that it signalled the end of schoolwork and an opportunity to embrace “freedom”.

Now that the year is almost over, are you excited? Maybe you are not because you feel downcasted. You are disappointed at how the year turned out to be; you couldn’t achieve all your dreams, or you  lost someone so precious to you. Perhaps, you have a solid reason to feel that way. You may have every reason to be depressed but you can choose to ignore those feelings because it is not the end of the world. There is one last thing I need you to do before the year ends which is the most important thing you will ever need to do this year.  I want you to RECALIBRATE; do some stocktaking and cross-examination. I say this all the time because I have seen it work for me.  It has been a routine in my life throughout the year.  For one minute, please Imagine a student who never takes notes of corrections to failures in tests and examinations, such a one is doomed to keep failing. Why repeat patterns and mistakes when you can deliberately learn from them? Before the year ends, have some deep meditations. Examine your life from the beginning till date. Examine your actions, decisions, relationships, and your life. Take a holistic evaluation of the whole you; physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual aspects.  You don’t need to have 100%, even if you had 0%, celebrate it and learn from it so you can have a comeback next year.

Now that the year is drawing nigh, do not mourn or lose hope. Salute yourself for making it to the last month of the year. After all, only the living can think and strategize. If you need to scold yourself do so; if you hit some milestones, celebrate yourself, make it loud. The goal is to make sure the coming year supersedes the current year. Do not assume you have escaped the troubles forever. As the saying goes, the problem you fail to handle today will wait for you tomorrow. The end of the year is not a license to freedom or a guarantee that things will change in the coming year. It is the steps you take to improve yourself exponentially that will bring about a quantum leap. Be deliberate about your success. Start preparing for the coming year from today.

Will you self-reflect?

I am rooting for you.
